Top 5 tips for Using Social Media as a Pageant Queen.

2020 has been a difficult year, especially for a pageant queen. Many of us were so excited to receive our crowns. We had big plans for promoting our platforms, our systems, and supporting our sister queens; only to have it all limited with the outbreak of COVID. Making appearances and participating in community service has been very difficult for everyone this year. However social media has unique benefits that can allow us to be active in our community and in representing our titles. Below are my top five tips to be successful in using social media as a pageant queen.

1. Use multiple social media platforms. A lot of social media platforms cater to specific generations and interests. In my personal life, I prefer one, but my children and students prefer another. My husband works in the corporate world, so he uses a third-platform the most. Therefore, I use multiple platforms under my title. It can be difficult to keep up with multiple social media platforms, but since so many people only use one or two, it is ok to post the same thing on multiple sites.

2. Check your system’s social media policy or speak to your director before making posts/videos. Some systems have specific guidelines that you will be expected to follow as a titleholder representing the system. Make sure you are meeting those guidelines.

3. Always have a second set of eyes check it out before you post it. If you wouldn’t want your grandma/grandpa/mom/dad/teacher/boss to see it do not post it. Always err on the conservative side. Have a close friend or family member see it first. Keep in mind your title and image before posting anything. Questions I always ask myself before posting are: Is this how you want to be represented? Could someone find this offensive? In 20 years, would I be embarrassed if my children saw/read this?

4. Use fun graphics. I have found the website Canva has been an amazing tool for me to use. I love how easy it is to use and I have found that my posts that use graphics from Canva get a lot more attention and traction from people.

5. Be responsive. Interact with people using your social media. Respond to their comments, open up discussion, and encourage participation on your sites. (I would also check your security setting and make sure you have it set so it requires your approval for others to post so that your interactions are appropriate and safe.)
