Dr. Aliya Frederick was born in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania (a suburb of Philadelphia) and now resides in San Diego, California where she works as a Pediatric Neurologist. Dr. Frederick completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County as a participant in the Meyerhoff Scholarship program, through which she further realized her interests in medicine and science, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She then completed her PhD in Neuroscience and a medical degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, before moving to San Diego for post-graduate training. Dr. Frederick is board certified in Psychiatry & Neurology with Special Qualifications in Child Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. She also has additional interests in pediatric headache and non-invasive neuromodulatory technologies.
Dr. Frederick’s start to pageantry was later than most after already establishing a career and a family. She was initially inspired to participate in pageantry by her daughter, Nilaja, who encouraged her to get involved. Dr. Frederick fell in love with the Regency sisterhood and the space provided to diverse women of all ages to showcase themselves and the amazing work being done in communities across the world.
Dr. Frederick is passionate about community outreach and because representation matters, she has a particular focus on efforts as a public speaker, educator, mentor, leader and advocate to increase Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in science and medicine to diversify the biomedical workforce. She not only uses her voice through pageantry to connect with others and promote her platform but also aspires to serve as a visible role model to remind us that today’s queen doesn’t have to conform to a specific mold and that being smart is beautiful too.
In addition to winning the 2022 Ms. Regency International title, Dr. Frederick was also the winner in the Spokesmodel, Everyday Wear, Swimwear, and State/National costume categories in the Ms. division and received recognition for service and community visibility. Dr. Frederick has also received recognition with the Regency Humanitarian award for service during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For her work, Dr. Frederick has been acknowledged with several professional and community awards and has been featured in print, including recent recognition as a San Diego Power Woman by Discover Magazines. In her spare time, Dr. Frederick enjoys being a mother to her multi-talented high school daughter, watching crime shows, and dancing samba with the SoCal Sambistas.
Dr. Frederick is honored to represent the Regency Organization as the Ms. Regency International and looks forward to an amazing year of service.
